Microsoft Warned Bill Gates about Flirting with Female in 2008

Microsoft administrators advised Bill Gates in 2008 to cease sending flirty emails to a female employee, but the matter was dismissed when Gates stated that he would stop, according to a corporate announcement released Monday. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report that Brad Smith, then Microsoft’s general counsel and now its president and vice chair, and another executive met with Gates after the company discovered inappropriate emails sent to a midlevel employee. Smith and another executive were later fired by Microsoft.

According to the publication, Gates did not dispute the discussions, and members of the Microsoft board of directors who were informed on them chose to take any further action because there was no physical touch between Gates and the employee.

Microsoft will only confirm the Journal’s findings to the Associated Press on Monday, according to a company spokesperson. Smith did not respond to a request for comment sent through the company’s communications department.

As stated in a written statement, Gates’ private office claimed in a statement that “these accusations are untrue, rehashed rumours from individuals who do not have firsthand information, and in some cases have serious conflicts of interest.” It declined to provide any further information.

Gates received the alleged 2008 warning more than a decade before the tech giant hired a law firm in 2019 in order to examine a letter from an engineer who said she had a sexual connection with Gates over a period of several years.

Bill Gates Resignation from Microsoft

That inquiry took place prior to Gates’ resignation from the Microsoft board of directors last year, but it wasn’t made public until after Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates announced in May that they had chosen to dissolve their 27-year marriage by mutual consent. Divorce proceedings were concluded in August. The Bill & Melinda Gates Organization, which was believed to be the second biggest philanthropic foundation in the world with around $50 billion in assets, is still jointly administered by the former couple and their children.

Gates is believed to have a net worth of around $130 billion. He served as Microsoft’s CEO from 1975 to 2000, and since then, he has steadily reduced his participation in the business he co-founded with Paul Allen. In 2008, he stepped out of his day-to-day job at Microsoft and continued to serve as the company’s chairman of the board of directors until 2014.

Microsoft spokeswoman Frank Shaw told the Journal that the firm’s management sent the warning in 2008 just before Gates announced his retirement from the company as a full-time employee. During an interview with the newspaper, Shaw stated that Gates had recommended seeing the employee outside of work in emails that were flirty and improper, but “not blatantly sexual.”
