Revisit Livestock Export Policy, says NA Panel
The Standing Committee on Commerce of the National Assembly has urged the Ministry of Commerce to review the country’s animal export policy, while also expressing grave worries over the country’s ban on the export of livestock, particularly poultry and its linked products.
The Committee met for the 26th time at the Parliament House, with Member of the National Assembly Syed Naveed Qamar serving as chair.
After receiving instructions from the Committee on this matter, it was informed that representatives from the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of National Food Security & Research had communicated with each other and were holding meetings with all of those involved in order to resolve the situation. The issue of the prohibition on poultry and poultry products, on the other hand, was brought before a court of law.
Because of the embargo, according to the Chair, export orders were not met, resulting in significant losses for exporters in particular and the industry as a whole. He stated that it would also create an opportunity for other countries to step in and fill the void. The Committee directed that the case be investigated as soon as possible by the Ministry of Commerce.
“The Trade Organizations (Amendment) Act 2021,” introduced by Ms. Sajida Begum MNA and referred to the Committee by the National Assembly on August 10, 2021, was discussed by the Committee. Sualeh Ahmad Faruqi, Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, informed the Committee that the proposed amendments to the Act, which would include an increase in the tenure of the Chambers of Commerce and other organisations, were currently being discussed with the Ministry of Law and Justice. Sualeh Ahmad Faruqi expressed his appreciation to the Committee for its consideration of the proposed amendments to the Act.
Following a thorough deliberation, the Committee resolved to call the key stakeholders, including the current President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Mian Nasser Hayat Magoon, and the past President of the FPCCI, to the next meeting.
