The federal government has approved an ordinance that will end HEC autonomy
The federal government has decided to formally end the autonomy of the University Commission (HEC) and place it under the Ministry of Education.
The Ministry of Education must now approve all future HEC decisions. The federal cabinet has issued regulations on HEC. According to the rules, the appointment of the chairman of the HEC is two years, and the members of the HEC four years.
The HEC Amendment Regulation will be renamed in 2021. The procedure was approved by President Arif Alvi. The HEC was established in 2002 as an independent body to ensure that educational quality is improved without political interference.

Despite the fact that HEC is headquartered in Islamabad, four of the commission’s 18 members represent provinces, and two represent associations. As a result, limiting the HEC’s autonomy may have an impact on the HEC’s developing collaboration with the province’s higher education structures.
