The government failed to make Urdu an official language, according to the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court ruled that the federal government had failed to declare Urdu as the official language of the United States of America.

Unanimously, a three-member panel presided over a contempt of court lawsuit seeking the use of Urdu as the country’s official language, which was filed by Umar Ata Bandial, the country’s acting chief justice.

As Justice Bandial put it, “we will lose our identity if we do not learn our mother tongue and national language,” he continued, adding that “in my opinion, we should also learn Persian and Arabic, exactly like our forefathers.”

He said that the Supreme Court had ordered that Urdu be made the official language in 2015, but that the federal government had failed to comply with that judgement.

The maternal tongue, as well as regional languages, are mentioned in Article 251 of the Constitution,” said the acting chief judge, who was seeking a response from the Punjab administration for failing to promote Punjabi (as an official language) in the state.
