Willow Smith reveals mother Jada Pinkett’s struggle against racism
Willow Smith opened up about mother Jada Pinkett Smith‘s long struggle with “intense racism and sexism”.
In a recent interview with L’Officiel, the 20-year-old revealed the discrimination she sees in her mother as a black singer.
“My mom hated it so much,” Willow told the magazine. “It was vicious racism and sexism, only dozens. People who threatened her with death threw glasses on stage. Some crazy things fell apart when she toured with her band.”
She continued, “I have to see this hatred first-hand. I’ve been frightened and I suppose I’ve become a bit used to it.”
Willow then praises Jada for handling all the hate so wisely. “Every time I feel this coming, I just go back to my memories of my mother and how she would have faced actual physical danger — she just bounced over it.
“Obviously she was scared. But she really showed me what ‘dressing’ really is, taking a stand and not being afraid of other people’s judgments and perceptions.”
